Corn and wheat are not harvested by a big, noisy combine, which would cut the stems to pieces, but by small tractors pulling Victorian “sail reapers.” On the interior is a “corn dolly,” usually woven from the last sheaf to be harvested and symbolizing the spirit that lives in the plant. In the spring the doll is ploughed into the earth again. Some cryptic numbers are found inside the lid: 7 ¾ + 7 ¼ = 21. David’s hat size is 7 ¾, his wife Sue’s is 7 ¼ and 21 is the number of years they’ve been married. The artists’ signature acorn is concealed in the rose bouquet on the front of the hat. This is the 113th carving David Lawrence has made for Harmony Kingdom.

 | Cherubini - version 1 New | The Great Latrino was returning in triumph! For four years he had been touring the globe, conducting sell out performances of his phenomenally successful operas. His cat Cherubini, the only memento of home he now kept, had ascended from stringy alley cat to sleek-furred feline cat-about-town. His caterwauling transformed to a melodious basso howl. The Italian-born composer Luigi Cherubini was known for his dramatic operas, sharp tongue and compulsive orderliness. The top hat this dapper cat hides in doesn’t seem to belong to the composer though. The “10/6” indicates that it belongs to the Mad Hatter from “Alice in Wonderland.” On the interior, a carrot and footprints indicate the White Rabbit has passed this way.

 | Churchill New | This feline preens himself in a bowl decorated with the elegant “Willow Pattern,” first used by the Spode factory in Staffordshire, England. David remembers looking at the pattern on the plates as a young boy and wondering about the people featured in the patterns. Who were those people on the bridge? Had the fisherman ever caught anything? He has adapted the pattern for this HK piece: the figures on the bridge are the four Lawrences and the fisherman has at last caught his fish. The church is based on the “Cathedral of the Moors,” located in David’s village. On the interior are a few willow leaves labeled “English Hurdle.” When willow is cut as a long, thin switch, it can be woven into a kind of fence known as a “hurdle.” An aspirin also appears because it is made from an extract of willow bark. This is the 117th piece David Lawrence has carved for Harmony Kingdom.
